Antioxidant activities of various extracts of lotus (Nelumbo nuficera Gaertn) rhizome.

چکیده
Lotus rhizome powder was extracted with solvents of different polarities. Antioxidant activities of the extracts were evaluated by a 2, 2'-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay and a beta-carotene bleaching assay, and compared with that of butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and ascorbic acid. Methanol showed the highest extract yield among all of solvents. Although acetone extract had the highest total phenolics content, methanol extract had the highest total phenolics recovery from lotus powder (20.1 mg catechin equivalents/100g lotus powder). Extract of either methanol or acetone demonstrated the highest DPPH scavenging activity at both 66.7 mg/L and 133.3 mg/L. All extracts exhibited higher antioxidant activity coefficient (AAC) than that of ascorbic acid, furthermore, dichloromethane and petroleum extracts had comparable AAC with BHA by the beta-carotene bleaching assay. The properties of the extracting solvents significantly affected the yield, total phenolics content and antioxidant activity of lotus rhizome extracts.

In the present study, two antioxidant micromolecular components (L2f-2 and L2f-3) and an antioxidant macromolecular component LB2 were extracted from lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.) rhizomes. MS, FTIR (Fourier-transform IR) spectroscopy and NMR were used to identify these compounds. L2f-2 was (+/-)-gallocatechin, L2f-3 was (-)-catechin and LB2 was a polysaccharide-protein complex with a molecu...
متن کاملLotus (Nelumbo nucifera) Rhizome as an Antioxidant Dietary Fiber in Cooked Sausage: Effects on Physicochemical and Sensory Characteristics
The objective of this study was to determine the physicochemical and sensory properties of cooked emulsion sausages containing different levels of lotus rhizome powder (0, 1, 2, and 3%, based on total weight). Lotus rhizome powder had no significant (p>0.05) impact on pH, moisture, protein, or ash content of sausage. However, fat content was slightly but significantly (p<0.05) decreased when th...

In the West, lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.) is relatively little known. However, for more than 3000 years, lotus plants have been cultivated as a crop in FarEast Asia, where they are used for food, medicine and play a significant role in religious and cultural activities. Holder of the world’s record for long-term seed viability (1300 years) is a lotus fruit (China Antique) from Xipaozi, Liao...

متن کاملGenome-Wide Analysis of Differentially Expressed Genes Relevant to Rhizome Formation in Lotus Root (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn)
Lotus root is a popular wetland vegetable which produces edible rhizome. At the molecular level, the regulation of rhizome formation is very complex, which has not been sufficiently addressed in research. In this study, to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in lotus root, four libraries (L1 library: stolon stage, L2 library: initial swelling stage, L3 library: middle swelling stage,...
